Yesterday afternoon a press conference and protest occurred over the removal of educator Karen Salazar, fired by the administrators of Jordan High (Watts) for "Afro-Centrism". Poet and Educator Mark Gonzales also publicly resigned from the school over frustration over administrative and educational atmosphere, along with over a dozen other teachers. SEE: http://unlockingtheclassroom.b... NOW: The Principal is calling students into the office for passing out flyers about Sazalar's firing and demanding the retention of caring teachers. He is claiming "disruption" of school activity even though the protest on the flyer is AFTER school hours and NOT ON SCHOOL GROUNDS! DEMAND: IMMEDIATE return of students to their classes; STOP the waste of their instructional time. STOP the harassment of youth practicing democracy. STOP the abuse of power.

LA Mayor Villaraigosa needs to support Karen Salazar and oppose the oppression that continues to exist.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is approved from the district. This teacher was targeted...it is pretty obvious. Also she didn't have tenure and would have received it in September...

I live in Maryland. I once taught Malcolm X in the classroom back in 2001. I taught from a video of one of his speeches. It led to a really good class discussion and the students were engaged. Honestly, I thought that there would be trouble in teaching it, but I never heard from administrators. I'm in agreement with Ms. Salazar. I feel that effective and interesting teaching draws from every aspect of life. It really does inspire critical thinking. Great coverage.
