"The Five Pillars of Islam" by Abdal Hakim Murad Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810 The first in a series of classroom-style lectures held at the world famous Abiquiu Madressa in New Mexico. The primary objective of this series was to educate non-Muslim teachers about the fundamental Islamic beliefs and practices within the context of an interactive and intensive spiritual retreat. In introducing this ambitious topic, Abdal Hakim Murad, a lecturer in theology at Cambridge University in England, asks two very engaging questions: What happens when you try to grasp the meaning and reality of another faith and why is Islam worth studying? After providing a more than adaquate answer, he proceeds on to the much anticipated overview of the five pillars of Islam. Murad provides a highly intellectual perspective that is useful for non-Muslims as well as Muslims. (Recorded at the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute seminar). Other topics discussed: Islamic "clergy", humility in studying another religion, the modern Muslim resurgence, Islamic "fundamentalism", "Muhammadanism", the Hadith of Gabriel, the idea of original sin, mosque architecture and wudu (ablution).

The Ottoman Turks didn't adopt Constantinople's symbols. An ancient coin found in Central Asia has recently shown that the crescent and moon was a Turkic symbol long before the Turks came in contact with the Eastern Roman Empire.

The importance of the celestial bodies can be seen in many Turkic epics, poems, songs, names etc... One quick example is that of the legendary leader of the Western Turks, Oguz Khan, named his first 3 born Sun, Moon, & Star emphasizing the importance of the celestial objects to Turks. The founder of the Ottoman Turkish empire, Osman, had a dream in which he invisioned a Crescent Moon stretching over the Earth, he took it as a good sign and made it the symbol of his dynasty.

The origins of the Crescent & Sun/star are in fact Turkish from ancient times, pre-Islamic. The Turks believed in Shamanisim and more importantly the one supreme Sky God (Tanri) along side others gods like that of the Moon & Sun, when they roamed nomadicaly on horseback in the steppes of Siberia & central Asia.

The crescent moon was never a Marian symbol. It IS the symbol of Hecate- goddess of the night, witches etc, adopted after an attempted Thracian attack on the City was repulsed at midnight and in moonlight, Byzantine adopted her symbol. This was centuries before Christ. Sorry Muslims, you stole Byzantine from Christianity, you also got a suprise present in return- the symbol of our ancient goddess of witches and black magic- and you've been proudly flying it on your mosques for centuries!

I [am] the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill Isa 43:3For I [am] the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt [for] thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee Isa 43:10 Ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I [am] he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

Really ? why dont you look up First Council of Nicaea , WHy is it that you can believe that we are the ones guilty of idolatry yet you have no problems believing the Jesus is God ,AND hes is the SON of God And he part of God and he and the holy ghost are all god Psa 81:9 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

Allah created the world dumbass, and gave the message of truth to all the prophets (pbuta)Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Isaah, Moses, Jesus before Mohammed, so of course he would be pre-islamic, duh! If you met an arab jew or christian jew, and said that they worship a moon god, they are going to kick your sorry ass. Because Allah simply MEANS God.
themanishere4 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Do Jews worship the star of David? Do christians worship the cross? It's symbols and they are not worshipped unlike the ignorant christian missionaries claim.

Ooh nice come back. All my points addressed and refuted. Re: Islam. Monotheism wasn't unheard of in Arabia before the Prophet, and there is a few (totally inconsequential) traditions I don't agree with - throwing stones at the devil for example. But you seem a bit confused about Islam; animals aren't sacrificed to God for example, the Qur'an actually tells people to stop the practice as it useless. "Allah is actually the pagan god of the pre-islamic era" No, Allah is the Arabic word for God.
