Reminds me so much of the great Clifford Brown's tone, smoothness, ideas, execution, etc. Lyrical and melodic. Truly one of the greats. Always fun to listen to Louis Hayes as well.

Now Blue Mitchell's MY kind of trumpet player, tasteful and lyrical. Bad notes just don't exist in this guy's vocabulary, lol! I think the one who comes closest to him today in that regard is Roy Hargrove, especially with the last two albums he's put out which have him back into straight-ahead jazz mode. Ain't nothin' I like better than a trumpet player singin' through his horn...>;-)

Wow!!! great line-up. Blue Mitchell is always great. Check out Blue's version of summer soft and see what a long and wonderful career this unbelievably under-rated jazz giant had. I am so glad to have seen this version of "Cool Eyes" (also known as "to beat or not to beat") I saw him live many times and it is great to refresh my memory. PS Horace,Lou and Junior also not famous enough!!!

twice as many notes? the StLouis Key: how many ways can you play 1 note!

Blue Mitchell has the most melodic and tasty trumpet solos of any of them from the hard bop era, in my opinion. By far my favorite trumpet player. There are 100 guys who can maybe play twice as many notes as Blue did but his playing still sounds fresh after all these years. Horace Silvers little lick at 4:18 is killer too. Genius.
