In Belgium, we let the police mark our bikes with our registration number (the one from our passport)
But it's not THAT effective, cause you can just grind the numbers out!

Sorry but New Yorkers are pretty savvy. I bet 90% of the people just glanced around and saw the camera. A really good way to steal a bike would be to have a friend tape it so it seems like your making a movie...
JUST FYI - there are poachers that sit in the cafe at Whole Foods with walky talkys and watch out the window for nice bikes. Another person follows you in the store so the guy stealing your bike can get a warning. Use high quality, off brand locks (not kryptonite) cuz they have keys!

Do u have to pay the fee for the bike? do they have a plate too?

I already made it my hymn of life

Why can't bike thieves act bold and pretend the bike is theirs? (Oh wait, they do.) Personally, I don't care about jewelry but I care about bikes. (It's only a rock!) Either way, the police should be protecting all types of property, not just the bourgeois'.
