Boiled shoestring AND tomato paste!! You should be so lucky... When I were lad we were only allowed to suck at them raw every evening then dry them out overnight ready to tie the cardboard back onto our feet with the next morning before going back down the pit. Didn't do me any harm, apart from the rickets and the silicosis.
